WILDERNESS LODGES IN KENYA PARKS AND GAME RESERVES.

LARSENS CAMP - SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE.

Larsen's Tented Camp was opened in 1987 and is set in lush lawns on the bank of the Uaso Nyiro, a river in Samburu National Reserve, 200 miles north of Nairobi on the border of the old Northern Frontier Province. Tranquility and nature embrace you the minute you enter Larsen's with the river being the perfect stage for an endless pageant of wildlife--elephants rolling and trumpeting in the shallows, timid impala nervously drinking, baboons and vervet monkeys swinging through the canopy of trees.

The leopard is the big attraction and other big cats are fairly common, but you should also look for Grevy's zebra and the reticulated giraffe. Both species are particularly finely marked and can only be seen in Samburu. You can also expect to see elephants, greater kudu, gerenuk, oryx, Somali ostrich and the vulturine guinea fowl among many others.
Many a tale is exchanged around the fire each evening. Amidst the glow from the embers, the calls of the African night, a waft of cigar smoke and the kick of a White Mischief liqueur, game drives are relived and personal histories exchanged - it's a wonderful venue for making new friends and imbibing the essence of Africa as did the safari pioneers so many years ago. An animal viewing platform in a tree lets you scan the vast Samburu plain.
There are game drives, champagne breakfasts on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro river, sunset cocktails in the wild, bird walks and black tie dinner in the dining tent.

In addition to an excellent year-round concentration of animals, Kichwa Tembo lies directly in the path of Africa’s spectacular Great Migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti, Tanzania, to the Masai Mara in Kenya. This is indeed nature at her most theatrical, offering you an African wildlife experience unsurpassed in the world.

At the height of migration, Keekorok lodge is surrounded by a swarming mass of wild game, and there is hardly any need to go on a game drive as it is not uncommon to see all sorts of wildlife on the perimeter of the grounds.
The Lodge can easily be accessed by light aircraft, landing at the Keekorok Airsrip or by road from Nairobi approximately 280km away. Keekorok's charm is its setting, its ease of access from Nairobi and the liberal use of local Sand River stone and cedar wood in its construction. There is a lounge furnished in leather and tartan and a dining room open to the terrace allowing fresh breezes and views of the Mara.

There are no fences around Keekorok and its not uncommon to see elephants and buffalo on the perimeter of the grounds or even strolling in.
There is a wide range of accomodation. Rooms are simply but tastely furnished, many with views of the Mara. And it is the Mara which is the focus of your stay at Keekorok.
